چکیده

Several recent studies have reported a mean size difference of about 20% between the metal-rich and metal-poor subpopulations of globular clusters (GCs) in a variety of galaxies. In this paper we investigate the possibility that the size difference might be a projection effect, resulting from a correlation between cluster size and galactocentric distance, combined with different radial distributions of the GC subpopulations. We find that projection effects may indeed account for a size difference similar to the observed one, provided that there is a steep relation between GC size and galactocentric distance in the central parts of the GC system and that the density of GCs flattens off near the center in a manner similar to a King profile. For more centrally peaked distributions, such as a de Vaucouleurs R law, or for shallower size-radius relations, projection effects are unable to produce the observed differences in the size distributions. Sizes of Confirmed Globular Clusters in NGC 5128 : A Wide - Field High - Resolution Study

Using Magellan/IMACS images covering a 1.2 x 1.2 sq. degree FOV with seeing of 0.4”-0.6”, we have applied convolution techniques to analyse the light distribution of 364 confirmed globular cluster in the field of NGC 5128 and to obtain their structural parameters. Combining these parameters with existing Washington photometry from Harris et al. (2004), we are able to examine the size difference...

Optical multi-slit spectra have been obtained for 47 globular clusters surrounding the brightest Virgo elliptical NGC 4472 (M49). Including data from the literature, we analyze velocities for a total sample of 57 clusters and present the first tentative evidence for kinematic differences between the red and – 2 – blue cluster populations which make up the bimodal colour distribution of this gal...

The Spatial Distributions of Red and Blue Globular Clusters in Major Dry Merger Remnants

Using high-resolution N-body simulations, we examine whether a major dry merger mitigate the different radial density distributions of red and blue globular clusters (GCs), since in nearby elliptical galaxies the red GCs have a steeper radial profile than the blue GCs. To this end, we study the relation between the density slope of the GCs in merger progenitors and that in a merger remnant, whe...

A Possible Explanation for the Size Difference of Red and Blue Globular Clusters

Most observations of the projected half-light radii of metal-rich globular clusters in a variety of galaxies have shown them to be ∼ 20% smaller than those of their metal-poor counterparts. We show using multi-mass isotropic Michie-King models that the combined effects of mass segregation and the dependence of main sequence lifetimes on metallicity can account for this difference, under the ass...

On The Formation of Giant Elliptical Galaxies and Globular Clusters

I review the current status of understanding when, how long, and how giant elliptical galaxies formed, focusing on the globular clusters. Several observational evidences show that massive elliptical galaxies formed at z > 2 (> 10 Gyr ago). Giant elliptical galaxies show mostly a bimodal color distribution of globular clusters, indicating a factor of ≈ 20 metallicity difference between the two p...
